In a year where most cultural institutions were forced to reduce their operating budgets, the Metropolitan Opera was able to increase theirs — and now boasts the highest operating expenses in the city at $289.8 million, according to Rebecca Olles’ article on Crain’s New York. Data is from 2010, and the article attributes the Met’s rise to a budget increase while former leader, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was forced to decrease theirs to $267.2 million. Rounding out the top three was the New York Public Library system, which also ranked number one in attendance — helped, no doubt, by the fact that its admission is free. New York City cultural research and advocacy group Alliance for the Arts has a few good reports on the general economic status of the city’s cultural centers as well.
