The recession is no excuse not to buy and enjoy art — not when organizations like New York-based Recession Art exist. Founded in 2009 by sisters Emma and Ani Katz, Recession Art shows and sells work by emerging artists to collectors at nearly any income level.

Their latest show, American Idolatry, goes up at Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center this Friday, October 29th, through November 6th. It will be curated by Legacy Russell with work from 17 artists (I, for one, cannot wait to see what CHERYL, the “four-member, semi-anonymous, often cat-masked artist collective” will contribute) and feature pieces in various mediums — four examples of which are shown above — along with performances and artist panels, all centered around themes of idolatry, worship, and Americana. Admission is free, though you’ll have to request tickets in advance for some of the shows and panels.
